Best time to visit Tanzania

Most of our travellers have this question in mind: They want to experience the beauty and wonders of Tanzania but are unsure when to travel. There is no specific time to visit Tanzania since safari activities can be enjoyed throughout the year. The timing of your visit should be based on what you want to see, where you want to go, and how much you plan to spend on your safari.

We've divided our safari activities into three seasons to simplify trip planning.

Peak season

(June to September)

This season is perfect for wildlife photography, safari game drives, and climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. It is considered a peak tourist season, attracting visitors worldwide to explore Tanzania’s diverse attractions.

One of the most exciting events of the year is the great migration. During this natural phenomenon, large herds of wildebeest and other animals travel across the Serengeti for better grazing pastures. However, since this period is trendy, planning and booking your safari and accommodations well in advance (at least 6 months) is essential to ensure availability and avoid disappointment.

Travellers seeking an unforgettable adventure should visit Tanzania this season, which presents an optimal window for experiencing the country’s abundant wildlife, breathtaking landscapes, and iconic natural wonders.

Highlights of Peak season

  • Favourable weather conditions, including dry and warm temperatures, make it ideal for outdoor activities such as wildlife photography and safari game drives. The pleasant weather enhances the safari experience and increases the chances of spotting animals quickly.
  • Experience Tanzania’s prime wildlife with ample opportunities to encounter majestic lions and graceful giraffes this season.
  • The best time for climbing Kilimanjaro is during the drier conditions. Clearer skies and lower precipitation levels guarantee a higher summit success rate.

The Great Migration is one of nature’s most spectacular events between July and August in Serengeti National Park. During this time, millions of wildebeests and zebras cross the Mara River, creating a breathtaking scene of raw natural beauty for travelers.

High season

(October to February)

In this season, travelers can enjoy fantastic wildlife viewing with fewer crowds. The convergence of the short rainy season makes it an ideal time for bird watching, making it a particular time to visit. With favorable weather conditions, planning a safari trip during this season is an excellent choice for anyone looking to explore.

Highlights of High season

  • During off-peak season, there are fewer tourists, making it an ideal time for those who want to experience a private and exclusive safari.
  • During the short rainy season, the natural vegetation in the parks is refreshed.
  • Bird watching is ideal in Tanzania during November when migratory birds arrive.

Low season

(March to May)

The low season typically occurs between March and May, characterized by heavy rainfall that can cause muddy and challenging road conditions for travel but also leads to lush landscapes.

The low season can benefit travelers willing to face the rain. Accommodation prices are considerably lower during this time and there are fewer tourists, which means a more intimate safari experience with less crowded game viewing areas. Moreover, birdwatching can be particularly rewarding during the rainy season.

While the low season may not be ideal for everyone due to weather conditions, it can provide unique opportunities for budget-conscious travelers and those seeking a quieter safari experience.

Highlights of Low season

  • During this period, most accommodation properties offer lower rates, making safaris more economical for budget-conscious travelers.
  • During the long rainy season in Tanzania, the landscape undergoes a fantastic transformation. The rains breathe new life into the environment, making it a lush and vibrant paradise. This is a unique opportunity for anyone who loves nature to witness its beauty. Although the rainy season may come with some challenges such as muddy roads, the captivating beauty of the lush landscapes makes it all worth it. Top of Form
