Rongai approaches the mountain from the north close to the Kenyan border. Because of its position, it has few crowds of people compared to other routes. It provides a chance to see wild animals along the way like buffalos, antelopes and elephants.

Program Details
In the morning, drive from Moshi to Rongai gate for registration formalities and trekking preparations.Proceed with the drive till Rongai’s starting point at 1950 m. Start climbing through coffee and maize plantations leading into the rainforest. The path leads to Rongai cavefor resting and overnight stay.
Trek out of the rainforest into the moorland zone passing through Eastern ice fields. The path leads on to Rongai’s second cave to break for lunch and some rest. Proceed with climbing to finally reach Kikelewa camp in the evening. Dinner and overnight stay at the camp.
A short steep climb is done while entering the alpine desert zone. Climb beneath the jagged spires of Mawenzi to finally reach Mawenzi tarn in the noon. Have a hot lunch upon arrival and take the rest of the day off resting. If interested, you may take a walk exploring the landscape and return later to the camp. Dinner and sleep at the camp.
This day is spent acclimatizing to enable your body getting used to high altitude. Start climbing on Mawenzi ridge which displays magnificent views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. By noon,start heading back to the camp for lunch. Have personal time resting and gaining energy for the next day.
Trek through the Saddle formed between beautiful peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi. Continue hiking where the landscape displaysKibo’s stunning view. The path leads to Kibo hut where you will arrive in the evening. It’s recommended to drink lots of water and as preparing for the summit. It’s recommended to sleep early by 07:00 pm.
Wake up by 23:30 for a hot cup of coffee and putting on trekking gears. Start climbing by midnight through the volcanic screen to reach Gilman’s (5,685 m) by sunrise. Take time to rest and make the final round trip to reach Uhuru Peak (5895m). At the summit, take pictures while feeling accomplished standing at the roof of Africa. Start descending to reach Horombo Hut in the late afternoon. Dinner and sleep at the hut.
Descend through moorland into the beautiful lush green forest. Arrive at the gate by mid-day for tipping the crew (guides, porters and cookers) and certificate awards. Green certificates are awarded to hikers who reached Gilman’s and golden to the ones who reached Uhuru peak.
Drive back to the hotel for a well-deserved rest.
