Shira 6 Days Kilimanjaro Climb
Day 1: Shira Gate To Simba Camp (3595 m)
Drive from the hotel in Moshi to Shira gate for registration formalities and trekking preparations. Start climbing through shrubs and giant heather. The trail leads to Simba camp where hot dinner will be awaiting. Overnight at the camp.
Day 2: Simba Camp (3595 m) To Shira 2 Camp (3850 m)
Trek into the moorland towards the volcanic rock formations on the Shira plateau. The path crosses over Shira Cathedral, a huge buttress of rock leading to Shira 2 Camp. Set tents for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3: Shira 2 Camp (3850 m) To Lava Tower (4630m) To Barranco Camp (3970)
Trek from the Shira plateau up a ridge towards Lava tower providing an extra day of acclimatization. Have rest at the tower and get time for a tasty lunch. Descend down the tower and continue walking to finally reach Barranco camp. Dinner and sleep at the camp.
Day 4: Barranco Camp (3,970) To Karanga Camp (4,040m) Barafu Camp (4670 m)
Climb steeply up the Barranco wall leading into the Karanga valley with stunning views of the Heim glacier. Continue walking to reach Karanga Camp for a lunch break. Trek out of Karanga valley to hit the junction connecting with Mweka trail. The path leads on to Barafu camp. Rest upon arrival and drink large amounts of water in preparation for the summit day. It’s recommended to sleep early by 19:00.
Day5: Ascend To The Summit At Uhuru Peak (5895m)
Wake up by 23:30 for a hot cup of coffee and putting on trekking gears. Start climbing by midnight through the volcanic screen to reach Stella point (5756m) by sunrise. Take time to rest and make the final round trip to reach Uhuru Peak (5895m). At the summit, take pictures while feeling accomplished standing at the roof of Africa. Start descending which is quite fast. The path leads to Mweka hut (3,100m) to arrive in the evening for dinner and sleep.
Day 6: Mweka Camp (3100 m) to Mweka Gate (1640 m)
Descend through moorland into the beautiful lush green forest. Arrive at the gate by mid-day for tipping the crew (guides, porters and cookers) and certificate awards. Green certificates are awarded to hikers who reached Stella point and golden to the ones who reached Uhuru peak. Drive back to Arusha for resting and much celebrations or Moshi for a flight back home.
